Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a Research Associate III to join the Geology & Geophysics Department.

The Research Associate III will be working on a project that has the broad objectives of seismically imaging an intact segment of oceanic-arc crust, in order to better understand crustal production in oceanic arcs -- a system of processes that are key to the habitability of planets but that are, nevertheless, poorly understood.

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits.

Job Description

Essential Functions & Duties

• This position has technical and intellectual requirements. The technical work involves travel time-based tomographic inversion to delineate seismic velocity structure, multi-channel seismic imaging, and geochemical phase-equilibrium modeling to infer elemental composition and process from the seismic results. The intellectual requirements are that the analytical products be abstracted into new knowledge, which is then introduced to the wider community through the publication of a compelling scientific paper. Also of importance is that the scientific objectives of this work align with the interests of the Research Associate, so that the work is both intellectually interesting to them while also furthering their long-term career interests as a scientist.

Non-Essential Functions

• Performs other duties as deemed necessary.

Required Experience & Education

• PhD in Geophysics with specialty in seismology is required
• Demonstrated expertise in multi-channel and wide-angle seismic data analysis, including tomographic inversion is required
• Demonstrated scientific publication record with papers published in one or more journals is required
• Programming experience in Fortran, Python, Matlab, Unix Shell Scripting and parallelization is required
