The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in: improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; developing indigenous capabilities around the world for national energy planning; deploying new nuclear power plants; preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors. The department has a dynamic, participative and interactive operating environment with inputs received from the Board of Governors, the General Conference, policy and decision-makers, and technical counterparts in Member States and the international development community.
The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation. The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section (NFCMS) assists interested Member States in the development of safe, environmentally friendly, economically viable, proliferation-resistant and sustainable fuel cycle options and it encourages information exchange on the exploration, mining and processing of uranium and thorium, on the design, manufacturing and performance of nuclear fuels, on the management of spent fuel, and on the development of advanced and innovative nuclear fuels and fuel cycles.
As a member of a team reporting to the Team Leader, the Uranium Production Specialist implements the activities related to the evaluation and recovery of uranium and thorium from the standpoint of resources estimation/classification and availability, economics and sustainability in current and future reactor fuel cycle systems, and operational aspects of the current uranium production cycle. This involves: (i) bringing together international experts by organizing technical meetings to prepare state-of-the-art and best practice reports in the areas of uranium resource identification, delineation, estimation and classification, mine geology, uranium mining and milling, processing of ores to ore concentrate and related environmental protection issues; (ii) maintaining information data on the abundance and distribution of existing identified uranium material resources; (iii) participating in peer reviews of uranium production facilities, and; (iv) supporting technical cooperation (TC) projects by organizing review missions training programmes, expert missions and workshops in various fields to develop technical aspect of capacity building programmes.
The Uranium Production Specialist is: (1) a programme developer and implementer, contributing specialized knowledge and experience to the planning and development of IAEA's programmes on uranium resources; (2) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and leading Consultancy and Technical Meetings; (3) a mission leader, planning and leading moderately complex review missions; and (4) a technical and project officer evaluating TC projects, and coordinating and evaluating coordinated research projects (CRPs) in the area of uranium resources.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Contribute specialized knowledge and experience to the planning, development and implementation of the IAEA's programme on uranium and/or thorium mining and processing, including management of technical information about facilities of the front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle including related environmental protection issues.
Supporting less prepared Member States in uranium resources development for nuclear fuel cycles by defining a pathway to preparedness for sustainable uranium mining and processing.
Develop international recommendations and guidance on uranium exploration/production with a view to addressing Member States' specific needs.
Plan and lead moderately complex Technical Meetings/Workshops on uranium resources, resource estimation and classification, and production. This includes proposing their subject, preparing their scope, selecting participants, coordinating the drafting of technical reports and documents, as well as the preparation of e-tools and the maintenance of data bases.
Plan and lead moderately complex or sensitive review missions and training activities for requested Member States to assess uranium resources and production needs. This also includes technical input to the preparation of mission reports.
Participate in peer reviews of facilities involved in the uranium production cycle, such as mine sites and uranium extraction facilities.
Evaluate TC projects, develop action plans and plan, organize and participate in seminars, workshops, expert missions, training courses and procurement plans.
Promote, coordinate and evaluate moderately complex CRPs among participating Member States and conduct moderately complex studies and assessments related to issues and trends.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Master's Degree - Advanced university degree (or equivalent) in chemical, metallurgical or mining engineering, geology, earth sciences or a related technical or scientific discipline.
Minimum of seven years of hands-on experience in the uranium production cycle.
Experience/involvement in the front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle activities at the international level.
Experience in managing small teams and projects.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
