Manage the organic and molecular biogeochemistry facility at Brown University. The facility includes two GC-FID and GC-MS devices, two isotope ratio mass spectrometers equipped with multiple sample introduction devices, an LC-MS, and miscellaneous equipment for sample preparation (solvent extraction systems, furnaces, glassware, etc.). The major responsibility is to maintain this equipment and ensure all parts of the facility are operating smoothly. Additional responsibilities include training students and other facility users in use of this equipment, advising students and facility users in organic geochemical analyses, scheduling instrument use and tracking and billing for analyses, and, when possible, developing new research, analytical methods and protocol in the facility including independent research.
Education and Experience
Advanced degree in Earth Science, Chemistry, or related field, and a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with methods and instrumentation used in organic geochemistry, including experience gained during advanced graduate studies, or the or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Experience with diagnosis and repair of gas and/or liquid chromatography systems and isotope ratio mass spectrometers is preferred
Ability and experience to troubleshoot both hardware and electronic problems in the above array of instrumentation
Ability to interact with and train a wide range of researchers
Experience in lab management
