Berkeley Lab's Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Plant-microbe-soil interactions Postdoctoral Scholar. As part of a multi-institution project this position is for a Postdoctoral Scholar with expertise in plant biology, biogeochemistry and microbiology, and is focused on understanding the role of microbial adaptation to local environmental niches in rhizosphere and consequent feedbacks to soil. The incumbent will particularly emphasize making the link between highly controlled laboratory systems and reliable field observations. The goal is to develop understanding and tools to manipulate components of the rhizosphere in model systems in order to test hypotheses about functions of community members. You will work with an interdisciplinary team performing field experiments, developing model laboratory ecosystems, and perform manipulation experiments using defined microbial communities or reduced complexity consortia. Population and community response to selection pressures will be followed using detailed genomic and metabolomic approaches and feedbacks to local chemical and physical environment will be determined using a range of geochemical analyses including spectroscopy.

Communicate regularly and work with other researchers on this project in order to facilitate progress toward program goals.
Ability to work carefully but efficiently in order to meet project goals in a timely manner.
Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
Presentation of research results to internal groups and at large national and international meetings.
Assisting in writing project reports.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Mentoring undergraduates and junior scientists.
Assisting with day to day lab maintenance.
What Is Required:
Ph.D in Soil Science, Environmental Microbiology, Biogeochemistry, Plant and microbial biology or a closely related field. Significant laboratory and analytical experience. Computational skills for analysis of genomic or biochemical data. Field experience.
Experience in growing different plants from seeds.
Experience with diverse soil/rhizosphere microbes.
Experience with basic soil chemical analysis and spectroscopic techniques.
Knowledge of working with analytical instruments to monitor microbial growth and metabolites.
Ability to work effectively with scientists of different disciplinary backgrounds and serve as a communication nexus.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience with FT ICRMS and other emerging organic matter analytical approaches.
Laboratory experience with microcosm/microfluidic design, construction, and operation.

This is a full time, 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
